Celebrating Success at the Redlands Coast Careers and Courses Expo

The recent Redlands Coast Careers and Courses Expo, hosted by the Redlands Regional Jobs Committee (RRJC), was a resounding success, showcasing the very best of what the region has to offer in employment, education and training. With 378 job seekers and 71 stallholders in attendance, the event was a vibrant hub of opportunity, connection, and inspiration.

This year’s Expo brought together students, job seekers, and professionals exploring pathways for development or career transitions. Attendees had the chance to engage with industry leaders, gain insights into emerging sectors, and connect directly with employers and training providers. It was a day filled with promise and positive outcomes for many in the Redlands Coast community.

Why Events Like These Matter

The Careers and Courses Expo serves several key purposes:

  • Information Gathering: Providing attendees with insights into career paths, industries, and educational opportunities.
  • Networking: Creating a platform for connections with recruiters, educators, and industry professionals.
  • Career Exploration: Highlighting emerging industries and in-demand jobs.
  • Guidance and Advice: Offering career counselling and workshops to support informed decision-making.
  • Access to Opportunities: Linking attendees with job openings, internships, and training programs.

These goals came to life through interactive exhibits, panel discussions, and one-on-one conversations, leaving a lasting impact on both job seekers and stallholders.

Community Impact: Stories of Success

The Expo wasn’t just about connections—it was about tangible outcomes. We’re proud to share a few of the success stories from the day:

  • Barton’s Motor Group: Tony Lum, Head of People and Culture, reflected on the success of their exhibit. “We met a good range of job seekers on the day. We shortlisted two candidates for formal interviews the day after the Expo, and we are pleased to have employed both candidates. One started as an automotive apprentice, and the other as an RV Handover Specialist.”
  • Women of Trades and Industry: Melissa Millar shared two placement stories. One of her Skilling Queenslander for Work participants, a mature-aged female, landed a role as an automotive apprentice with Barton’s Motor Group. Another participant, a disengaged 16-year-old, found a new direction thanks to a conversation with Liz from Senior College TAFE. By the end of the day, arrangements had been made for her to re-enter education, providing hope and a new start.
  • Capalaba Cat Cottage: This local business employed two Redlands Coast residents they met during the Expo. They expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase their business and advertise their job openings to such a diverse audience.
  • Redlands Window Cleaning: As a direct result of the Expo, this business successfully hired a new employee, highlighting the event’s effectiveness in bridging job seekers and local employers.

A Growing Region, A Thriving Workforce

The Redlands Coast, also known as Redland City, is experiencing steady population growth. Currently, the population has increased to approximately 166,8091, with projections indicating it will reach around 212,0002 by 2046.

This growth highlights the need for innovative workforce solutions to meet the demands of the region’s expanding industries. Des Kerr, Chairperson of the Redlands Regional Jobs Committee, emphasised during the event, “For people coming through the doors today, it’s about giving them options and opportunities that they might not have thought of for themselves, and hopefully inspiring them to think differently and have an open mind about their career.”

The Expo aligns with the objectives set out in the RRJC’s 2024 Action Plan, which focuses on building a resilient and skilled local workforce. By hosting events like the Careers and Courses Expo, the RRJC actively supports key priorities such as workforce diversification, improving educational outcomes, and connecting talent with local opportunities.

Building on Momentum

The Expo was more than just an event—it was a celebration of the resilience and potential of our community. Caitlin, a job seeker who attended the Expo, summed it up perfectly: “This was a much more personal approach than applying online. I got real guidance and connections that I couldn’t have made elsewhere.”

From first-time job seekers to career changers, attendees walked away inspired and empowered. Many found new pathways they hadn’t previously considered, and the in-person interactions created opportunities to explore their potential in a supportive environment.

A Bright Future Ahead

At the RRJC, we are committed to supporting the Redlands Coast community through initiatives like the Careers and Courses Expo. By creating spaces for meaningful connections, we help build a stronger, more inclusive workforce.

We want to thank everyone who contributed to making the Expo such a success—our stallholders, volunteers, and attendees. Together, we’re shaping a future filled with opportunity for the Redlands Coast.
