Thinking about a career in hospitality, tourism or events? Whether you’re dreaming of working in a five-star resort, planning weddings, or serving your community through eco-tourism, this is an industry full of opportunity — if you know how to make your start. At a recent In-Industry Experience Day hosted by Cleveland District State High School and supported by the Redlands Regional Jobs Committee (RRJC), local employers shared their best advice for young people stepping into the workforce. Here’s what they said:
1. Say Yes to Opportunities
“So many of us started with a simple work experience or casual job. That’s how you learn, grow, and make connections.” – Jack Fisher, Spicers Retreats
Your first job doesn’t have to be your dream job. Focus on building skills, meeting people, and showing your work ethic — it all leads somewhere.
2. Attitude Beats Experience
“We can train skills, but attitude is everything. Be proactive, ask questions, and be willing to learn.” – Nicci Payouw, The Grand View Hotel
Even if you’ve never worked in the industry before, showing up on time, being curious, and working as part of a team will make you stand out.
3. Learn the Basics and Do Them Well
“From setting a table to greeting a guest — these small things build big impressions.” – John Sadleir, Sirromet
Mastering the little things (like customer service basics and presentation) shows employers you’re serious and ready for responsibility.
4. Build Your Confidence Early
“A lot of students don’t realise how many career pathways there are in tourism and events. The earlier you explore, the clearer your path becomes.” – Gordon MacGregor, Young Tourism Leader
Ask questions during work experience. Volunteer at local events. Every bit of exposure helps you feel more prepared for the real thing.
5. Don’t Wait for the Perfect Job — Start Somewhere
There are plenty of entry-level roles in Redlands’ hospitality and tourism sector. Look out for:
- Food & beverage roles (cafes, restaurants, catering)
- Event support (festivals, weddings, functions)
- Customer service (visitor centres, tourism operators)
Each role teaches transferable skills and opens doors.
6. Be Open to Training and Growth
Many local employers offer training programs, mentorships and even apprenticeships. Some also support school-based traineeships. Ask about them when applying for work.
7. Show You Care About the Industry
“This is an industry built on people and passion. If you enjoy helping others and working in dynamic environments, you’ll go far.” – Lisa Barry, Redland City Council
Hospitality, tourism and events are all about experiences. Bring your energy, enthusiasm, and willingness to deliver great service.
